MAKING FOOD YOUR MEDICINE PART 2 [EAT RIGHT OR DIE FAST]

 

Here then are tips on what to eat and not eat.

Generally whether you are dieting or not, if you eat well, you will be healthy. Pastas/noodles like spaghetti and the likes should be reduced and lentils, beans of all kinds, yam, cassava meals, plantain, rice etc. Please note that for rice the Nigerian grown especially the un-polished Abakiliki [Ebonyi State] rice with the brown one the healthiest for the diabetics. Potatoes, vegetables and green leafy ones in particular, carrots, legumes, spices, seeds, and all other native meals and condiments are perfect for your health. Fermented food is excellent. Fura de nunu, yogurt, locust beans [daw daw] are all rich in probiotics enhancing the gut microbiota which aids digestion in your gut or bowel system.

Fish is so much better as a protein source than red meat, but goat meat and lamb are also good as they are lean meat. Chicken and turkey are super and sea food awesome especially for people living in the riverine areas. Crayfish, prawns, periwinkles, crabs and many others. If you cannot afford all these protein meals, crayfish will do for it is as rich in protein and so are beans, soy meals like tufu etc.

Nutritionists will tell you that to know how balanced your meal is, you should check the number of colours in your plate. The more colours the more nutritious. Like me I love beans meals, which could be either [moi moi, akara, porridge beans or plain one with stew], then I throw in one or two carrots, lettuce if I have or a portion of green or spinach as some call it or cucumber all mixed. Occasionally I throw in one boiled egg, a piece of yam or whole meal bread and am just ok. Well this is what works for me, I can spice up from time to time by adding a little portion of brown rice with plenty veggies but I always stay within the boundaries that my body system has set for me.

If you understand your body very well it will always tell you what is good for you. If you listen to your body the chances are you will never go wrong. I for instance anytime I eat or drink what my body does not want it tells me immediately. It’s either I do not get a rest full night sleep, or I get a headache, or my knees, waist or shoulder hurts. It’s really amazing how poor ingestion of either food or drink can tell my body if they are good for me or not.

I know what is good for me for my body tells me so. Once I eat what it does not want it tells me immediately. I strongly believe we must all listen to our bodies for they constantly talk to us. When you stay in line with what is acceptable to your body system you run away from all kinds of diseases. But when you disobey be sure to pay a very high price for that. Many people’s health deteriorate and some actually die because of not listening to their bodies and so keep over burdening them with some of the poisons we ingest as food and drinks.

The notion people have about eating the so called oyibo [Western] food and thinking they are living the life is a terrible one. Our native grown food are the best quality of food. Do not be deceived for all sugar coated baked and spiced up meals and drinks are very poor substitute to our tribal and native meals and rich drinks. Lately Nigerians are very innovative making all manner of healthy drinks, from ginger to carrot, beetroots, Zobo from hibiscus flowers, coconut, sour soup and so many other fruit punches. Adding sugar though to these natural drinks really reduces their health benefits especially for people above 40 and of course with health challenges like diabetes, leaky gut, cancer and so many other diseases. But if you must sweeten them you can use natural fruits rich in antioxidants like banana, tiger nuts, coconut nuts, dates and other sweet fruits.

Vegetables are also fantastic meals rich in vitamins and during rainy season makes them affordable. You can grow all kinds in your compound or glean from your neighbours garden, that is if you have a cordial relationship with them.  The only challenge however is that fertilizers and genetically modified seeds have changed the food narrative not to talk about the preserving process. The time to grow your food is now so you can get it right.

 

Research has shown that the so called oyibo and sugary meals and drinks we crave and feed our children are the cause of the most debilitating diseases especially diabetes. The anoughing thing is that they are very expensive. Energy drinks are a no no, and so are all other sugary soft drinks. Run for your dear life I scream when I see people gulping down these poisons they call minerals or soft drinks. Children are said to be suffering from diabetes, not to talk of those that are genetically disposed to having it from their lineage.

You might be asking why I am taking too much about nutrition here. It is very key dear to living a healthy life that will keep you and your loved ones away from the hospital. Trust me if you and your family have all other challenges but are healthy, you are so so rich. The cost of health care without insurance is what you do not ever ever want to deal with. So no matter what you are going through, if you are healthy and those around you are too, please stop whatever you are doing right now and waltz away. Pick up your baby or beau and swing them around, laugh dance shout and rejoice for whatever you are going through will also pass. Like I said before if you make food your medicine by eating good healthy kinds, you will hardly be sick, and if you do, you recover fast and spend less also. My people have an adage that says that what is sweet kills.

The thing is to cut your coat according to your size and be creative as you cook so that you are able to eat right and yet spend wisely. Everything is expensive you must be saying but there is always a way out if we ask God for wisdom. If you also try out different meals you might actually find creative ways to eat and still achieve good taste and nutritive meals. Africans love indulging their taste buds and so most times cheat themselves out of the nutritive values in meals. We either over salt, over spice with the wrong condiments or over cook most meals.
