It is now obvious that college or university education is not just enough to secure and sustain a job or live a balanced life. There are skills required to work better, increase productivity and also live a fulfilled life. There is this notion that the highest form of education is the university, and that graduates are truly learned and educated. But my experience as one who have lived five decades and counting, is so far removed from this widely held notion.
Every day it is dawning on both the employer and the employee that the training gotten from higher institutions of learning are not enough to navigate the part of work and all other aspect of living. In the labour market and workplace especially, job mismatch issues have become an ongoing challenge and employers and employees are all striving to bridge this gap and enhance performance and productivity.
This disparity between training and industry now drives the need for both employers and employees to identify and inculcate most of these essential skills needed for optimum performance in all industry.
The importance of transferable skills otherwise known as employability skills can never be over emphasized in the work place and by strong implication the entire society. A closer look at the skills in question will give one the true nature of what quality of life would have been if these skills are brought to bear in all the facets of human interaction starting from the work place to our homes and communities.
Human relations will not only be improved but human beings will truly be human, living higher and better as God who made us had planned.
These skills include but not limited to the following: –
- Communication Skills
- Organization and Planning
- Leadership and Team Management
- Problem Solving
- Teamwork Ability
- Self-Management
- Time Management
- Work Ethic
- Personal Grooming and Etiquette
- Commercial Awareness, Reliability
- Creativity
- Critical thinking
- Emotional intelligence
- Listening and Providing Feedback
- ETC
The above skills are required not just for the work place but for all human relationships. The above list is not exhausted, there are so many other skills with unique relevance to peculiar jobs and relationships. I believe that for anyone to be successful and thrive in whatever relationship they are in, either at work or elsewhere, the mastery of these skills is a priority.
There is something very encouraging and rewarding about the word ‘Transferable’.
Each time I teach and practice these skills, I dream about a time and season where everyone who has learnt and is practicing these skills, take it upon themselves to impact such skills on all the people in their sphere of influence. Am talking from the work place to our homes, schools, churches, public places and any place where humans interact.
If all the truly civilized and educated who have imbibed transferable skills can work on imparting on others around them by living out these skills in their lives, exhibiting and displaying them, incredible number of people will be positively imparted. You know, I have never stopped wondering what our societies will be like if we all get involved in ensuring that all are employable as the case might be, whether you are an employer or employee. This is because nothing in life is cast on stone as an employer today can be an employee tomorrow.
Looking at how poorly a lot of people behave lately, one begins to wander how things were allowed to degenerate to the state it is now. If you have been an employer of labour most of your life like I have been in this part of the world, you will understand what I am saying. The dearth of these skills in both the skilled and unskilled labour is disturbing. It is like a lot of people come to the workplace just to make money by any means suitable to them and most time in opposition to the ultimate goal and vision of the organization that they work for.
There is a huge gap that needs to be bridged in the work place to enhance performance and productivity. I have thus become obsessed with the idea that every educated person owes it to not just God, but their parents/ family members especially their children, their employers or employees and the society to model all that these skills are and represent. It is only in doing this that we can reclaim our humanness and live fulfilled lives with dignity. It is the surest and fastest way to optimal productivity in all our endeavours.
It has become more glaring and obvious that the quality of every life is hinged on the knowledge and application of these skills and if we continue to neglect their importance and place in our lives, we will truly regret it.
So the call to action I put out today to you the reader and those you will share this with are these:
- Do an appraisal of the skills you have and those you do not have?
- Plot a graph of the skills you do not have and prioritize them as they affect your job and relationships across board.
- Put a plan in place as to how to begin to learn and relearn these skills in order of priority
- Then look at the skills you have and do another chart as to how you plan to begin to impart them on people in your areas of influence
- Every month appraise you- self as to how well you have fared actualizing your plan of 3 and 4 above
- Reward your-self and those that helped you achieve your goal any way you know will encourage more learning and practice
- And reorganize your plan because as you engage consciously this time you will come to realize that the skills you thought were not very important and so was down your ladder of priories finds themselves moved up.
- Make an effort daily to integrate as many skills as possible in your daily transactions.
- Plan to attend a training session, conference or workshop and step what you have learnt down to your inner circle of influence, starting with your family and co-workers if you are an employer of labour.
