Waiting for answer to prayers seems to be one of the most difficult moments in every one’s life. This waiting time however determines how rewarding and glorious our answers and lives will be. If you are reading this final part of this series, it will really be helpful if you can read through the beginning parts of the series for a meaningful whole.

As you wait on God it is very important to know 2 vital things

  1. Why God expects you to wait on Him
  2. Your part in the waiting and how you wait.

Waiting for anything has never been easy especially waiting for answer for prayers from God. Some people, even hard chore Christians doubt the existence of God as they await answer to prayers and long sought desires. It is very frustrating when the time we think God should answer us stretches beyond what our patience could handle. It is even more disheartening and humiliating when everybody around us seems to be getting what we are praying and asking God for with ease. It could be in the areas of health, finance, marriage, relationships or your relationship with God and many more. I do have good news for you dear. Whichever one you seem to be going through it is so comforting to know that God Himself in Isaiah 41:10 told us to

“Fear not, for I am with you: be not dismayed, for I am your God”.

Isaiah 41:10

There are 365 ‘Fear Not’ in the Bible, 1 for each day of the year. The question however is “Why then do we fear” and not wait on God to be God in our lives. We must learn to wait for Him for what He promised; He sure will do since He is not a man to lie.

Why God expects us to Wait

  1. He wants to build our Faith and Character
  2. He wants to use us after He has built us up for His pleasure

Waiting on God is one of the greatest test of any child of God; for it is in the waiting that He builds us, imputing all the godly character He wants displayed in our lives. It is in the waiting that He pushes us to know Him more and grow more in the Knowledge and understanding of Him. It is in this waiting that we become wise mostly based on the things we have suffered or experienced. After all He told us that we will have trouble in this life, so why do we expect all things to be rosy always.

 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

John 16:33 [NIV]

Lately I have began to talk to myself any time the pressure to worry over things I have no control over comes up. I quickly remind myself of the fact that the bible says to expect hard times on earth.  God Himself was tested and tried and because He overcame He promises to be with us and to help us overcome also. Knowing and experiencing life on earth am sure is the reason God gave us the gift of the Holy Spirit. He knows that if He could face such arduous temptations and cruelties from men while on earth, how much more us mere mortals.

That is why He did not just give us the Holy Spirit physically but made Him live inside all that have accepted Him as their Lord and Saviour. God in His awesome wisdom choose to indwell us so we can be able to do what we could not do without His help in our lives. The Holy Spirit living inside us is for our help so we can go through trials and tribulations and triumph because we carry God inside to help us always. So not only is He with us always but He promises us that no temptation greater than us will ever show up in our lives. For each that comes He makes a way of escape. What a God. What crazy love with which He loves us. This is exactly how the bible puts it:  

“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it”.

1st Cor 10:13 [NIV]

Most times when I look at the love of God and how He works in us to show that love, I marvel.  I went to church recently and came back only to find out that my android phone had been nipped right inside the church. Naturally I should be sad and troubled, but I honestly did not know where the peace and calmness that overtook me for days came from. Initially I will fret and rant, rush and replace the phone while cursing the thief, but this time around I refused to be bothered. Over days I realized that all the sadness and anger over the bad news from social media had seized. I actually felt that it was time to detox my entire system from all the bad/sad depressing news in the land. With this decision came a rest and peace from all the bad news that had been flowing into my system saddening, agitating and sometimes causing me to fear.

I actually stopped missing the phone as I thought I could. Whatever the devil thought he could achieve with taking my phone, he lost because I did not allow it to take my joy nor peace away. Then something incredibly awesome happened. A friend that used to send prayers to my whatsapp stopped getting my amen and similar prayers for his life. He reached out to me to know if am ok. When I told him my phone was stolen he promptly told me to send my account number to him. He sent me double the amount of money that I bought the lost phone with. Isn’t God wonderful. If I had spent time fretting, complaining and trying to divert the resources I have planned for immediate and important things around me to buy another phone, I might not have received this gift from God through this sensitive friend that allowed himself to be used by God for this noble act.

The issue here is that the world will not stop if we wait a little more for those things we think we need now. God has prepared better things for us, better than the one we are trying to loose our dignity, morals, ethics and peace for. There is an erroneous thought amongst people especially Christians. That thought is to always measure God’s love in people’s lives based on the extent of their material wealth and success. Mind you there is nothing wrong with that, but that should not be the parameter from which the success of any child of God should be measured. What is most desirous of God is that we grow and mature in Him to the extent that His image becomes reflected in our lives. He wants us grown in ways that we become the light that light the paths of others till they see the way to come to Christ. Just like Saint Paul said:

” For we are the sweet fragrance of Christ [which ascends] to God, [discernible both] among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing”

2nd Cor. 2:15 [AMP]

The other day I came across a quote from Charles Spurgeon on Facebook. It touched me so much that I kept meditating on it all day long. He said that ‘people read Christians and not the Bible’, not his exact words but what I deduced from the quote. God’s intention as we wait for His promises to come through for us is to teach us virtues and principles that we might not be able to ever learn if everything we want is dropped on our laps speedily. Like my pastor used to say, no parent gives a 10-year-old a car for a birthday present peradventure the child uses it to kill him or herself.  

There are virtues patience and endurance alone can teach you. There are lessons you can only learn by going through the waiting time in God. Spiritual maturity in God is not just learning and quoting scriptures but doing what Christ will do in all situation and circumstances that life throws at you, both the pleasant and the unpleasant ones alike. You might never know how to empathize if God has not taken you through some challenges, equipping you with the wisdom on how to counsel and guide those going through the same challenges.   

Our part in the waiting and how we wait.

Impatience has robbed so many of us of all that we can be and do in and for God. Without building our character through adversity, tests and trials we will make a ship wreck of our lives with most of what we desire from God. Until we begin to know that our future is all wrapped in His plans and purposes, and that He alone can bring it to pass, we can begin to chill. Not really chill chill, for we are not to be immobile and stagnated as we wait.

Chilling in God, simple gets us to a place of rest in our souls. When we come to this realization that God is in control, we then begin to ask what He will have us do as we await His response to our needs.  As we wait, we should be asking Him for help in all the aspects of our lives that need His transforming power. We should ask for guidance and the resources for us to do His pleasure and not ours. When our focus is more on what will please Him, that is when He begins to give us what we need for the journey ahead effortlessly.

The word of God is indeed very rich, but we tend to just flip over them without comprehending the truth embedded in them. Even when we comprehend the truth we still chase after our desires. The society also does not help. Materialism has eaten deep into the consciousness of people around us. From friends to colleagues, family, peers and others, one is constantly being appraised and valued based on material things.

The pressure to succeed is continuously put before our eyes and so compelling people to chase after things that the people of the world care about and value. The power of acceptance and respect most times drown the voice of God calling us to first build character, wait on Him till the work He yearns and wills to do in our lives are given the attention He so desires.

The moment we refuse to be sucked into the pressure of pleasing everyone else except God, we will be directed to what will please and honour Him. As we begin to do these things, His guidance and provision for what He has called us to be and do in Him begins to come to us. Mostly from unusual circumstances, persons, places and time. So I say chill folks, chill. You have lost nothing.

Remember it is not turn by turn but time by time.

When it is not your time in God, you will stress yourself out and loose the peace and quietness you need to be able to hear Him. Hearing Him helps you tremendously for it is from His voice/counsel that you get the direction of where and to whom to go to.

It is His voice/counsel that tells you what to do, how to do, when to do, where to do and with whom to do.

When you have heard and hid God’s voice/counsel on all these, everything you need begins to find their way to you. It is like connecting the dots. All resources especially human resources begin to stream into your life.

Mind you, you can have material resources but end up with human vultures who come to tear into pieces every work you do and before you know it, all you see is the skeleton of what would have been the living evidence of what God had wanted to grow and sustain through you.

If you have been despairing and at your wits end, now is the time to ask God for the enablement to wait on Him. When you have asked Him, know He heard and will surely show up. How you might ask.

  1. Just start by observing few minutes of waiting time daily after prayers and hear what He will whisper to your spirit. If you are born again and filled with the Holy Spirit, learn to spend the first 30minutes of the day speaking in tongues.
  2. Start paying more attention to your dreams, and keep a dream journal for He talks to us through dreams. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you interpret the dreams so you can pray through even as you address the revelation God gave you in the dreams.
  3. Study the Bible and other holy books on how to not just wait on God but to also hear and trust Him. Trusting God is paramount to waiting on Him and reading testimonial books on Trusting God will boost your faith in Him.  I will recommend few here that have been of tremendous help in my life.

  3. “Hearing God –The Ultimate Blessing” by Raymond Ho
  4. “Trusting God –The Ultimate Peace” by Raymond Ho

There are so many incredible books on these topics that can be of great help and comfort, so please find time to get and read them as you wait trusting God to answer your prayers.

After you have done all, then you wait even as you continue to pray. He alone is God and only Him can choose how the help you long for can come. However, since He cannot come down from heaven to help you, He uses human beings to do so. Most times His help comes from the least expected place, person and time.

The way His help comes defies all human understanding and that is sometimes the reason some of us give up our waiting time in God and act out our desperation. We all know that waiting time if built on faith and hope is not as torturous as it normally is when we are doing it on your own and hoping that help comes in our terms and time. With God, it does not work that way. You must wait for his time and work on his terms, that is God for you, He does not change His principles to suit any one. His truth is same throughout the entire world and to eternity, and all things happen in His time. 

I will sum up this post with what Jill Briscoe said about waiting on God.

“Waiting on God does not mean waiting on everything else in life until the prayer is answered, the situation is fixed, or the nightmare is over. Waiting on God gives us a chance to grow trust while we busy ourselves with whatever personal responsibilities we have. The devil loves to slow us to a dead stop, telling us we need to wait until things are okay again before we can serve, teach, preach, or take up our daily duties.  He would paralyze us with the pain of waiting. The devil says, “Wait until things are normal.” God says, “Keep working while you’re waiting.” Next time a problem arises in your life and you are tempted to ask, “Are we nearly there?” settle in for the long haul and learn patience. How can we learn it unless God gives us a reason to use it? It is hard to be in God’s waiting room, but love accepts a difficult situation without giving God a deadline to remove it. God wants to see us grow in patience and trust in the soil of our suffering”.

Her prayer also is amazing, may we all pray and believe God will help us wait on Him successfully.

“Lord, I have to be honest. I don’t like waiting rooms. Too often, I want to give You a deadline and then am disappointed when You don’t meet it. Give me the faith and patience to wait well and not fail to carry out those things You have for me to do during this waiting time. I want to trust You more; I want to grow in my patience—but it’s so hard. Give me the strength to accept this difficult situation in my life and to trust Your perfect timing. In the meantime, help me to get on with it! Amen”.

As you wait know that is not going to be so much about what you expect, or from whom you expect it, or how you expect it nor about when you expect it. It is all about what God wants to do and when He wants to do it. Knowing this truth helps you a lot, for once you have committed your prayers into the hands of God, you simply rest in His bosom knowing that He who has promised to do so much more than what you have asked will respond at the time that is the best for you in Him. This attitude drives away all the pressures, stressing and worries and astounds people around you as you sail through life composed and happy despite your challenges.  

I am not just writing these for the sake of blogging but because I have seen God show up in my life when I least expect Him to. I have seen now prayers and desires I have nursed for decades fall in my lap now. I now feel so bad knowing that all the joy and pleasures of rest and quite confidence I should have enjoyed were denied me because of poor attitude associated with worries and strivings.

3 very important truths to take home from this post are that;

  1. God hears your prayers and cries for help
  2. God is with you till the end, He will never leave or abandon you
  3. You should wait and trust that God will always come through for you at His time and not your time.

There are so many uplifting and comforting scriptures that addresses individual situations, it beholds us to search them out and proclaim over our lives even as we wait for answer to our prayers, for they shall surely come. Tara friends.

    This is the key to moving out far from depression and all it’s accompanying attributes. When we stay genuinely pleasing God, we won’t have to wait, except when the devil tries out his hands again one. Yet God will always come through for us.
