#HEALING HURTS, WOUNDS AND SCARS [PART 1]

Steps to Healing

The journey of life is like a warfare, with the earth the battle ground, the earlier we all realize it and begin to really fight for our lives and destiny, the better for us. It is now obvious to many of us, that life does not easily hand over to us all that we need and desire, we just have to fight to get and keep them every step of the way. Almost everything is programmed from the devil to make you fail especially if you have a great destiny to fulfil in God. So put on all the whole armor of God and be ready for any battle the enemy and life presents, for you are able. I just love what apostle Paul said in Ephesians 6:10-18

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints…”

Eph 6:10-18

From July of this year to now, I have been writing about the challenges a lot of people are facing lately. These challenges are of varied kind but at the root of most of them are financial issues. These issues seem to have their toll on relationships, people’s health and wellbeing. I have also talked about how not to allow despair and desperation rob you of your joy and all that life has to offer, if you can be a little patient.

I also went into how we can be wounded and scarred by past and ongoing hurts, and the spiritual warfare’s we fight to combat the unseen spiritual world that sponsor these battles. But in the concluding part of this long drawn discuss I will be talking about healing. How do we all begin to heal from all the trauma that we have been dealt by life.

In this post I will try not to bore us with tales and theories but posit practical steps that will call all that have been hurt, wounded and scarred in the past to action. Positive actions that if taken will have you back on track and living your life to the fullest. But before we get into it, let this truth permeate your mind.

In the first post on #hurt, wounds and scars I enumerated the sure signs that you might be hurting, wounded and possibly scarred and not know. If you follow this link you will read that post. https://fountainofresources.com/hurts-wounds-and-scars-part-1/

The fact is that no matter how hurt, wounded and scarred you might be, you can be healed and bounce back to life if you so will. The power of the will is the greatest gift God gave man and everyone living can draw upon the incredible power of the will to overcome every challenge they might be facing or might have faced in the past.

The challenge however is that most of us do not exercise the power of the will which is the greatest gift God gave man. It is a choice you have to make, to decisively, will to let go off all that hurt and the objects of the hurt and begin the process of healing. It might not be easy at the beginning, but if you gather the reins of your heart, mind and soul you can pull up the will from within you, to sustain your choice.

In part one of #Hurts, wounds and scars I talked about things you need to know and do,  to fast track your healing.

  1. Awareness. knowing you have been wounded. This is your ability to confront all the emotions you have pushed down your subconscious mind because they hurt badly.
  2. Wakefulness. Waking up to the fact that you are hurting, wounded and have scars.
  3. Acceptance. Accepting and not denying the hurts, the wounds and the scars
  4. Willingness. Willing to go through the Healing Process involving Forgiveness first for yourself, for those that directly hurt you and the ones who rejected you or treated you poorly because of what you went through or still going through.

Going through the above process is not easy because while you are still hurting, you try as much as you can to push away the hurting feelings, but it is not always easy or good to do that. To most people they want to feel only positive emotions of love, joy, hope, happiness etc and you are prepared to do anything to feed these emotions. It is ok however to feel neutral over the hurtful things because this way the emotions will not have power over you. Dr Renee Mudrey of Transcendent Heart Life Coaching called it being in the ‘Neutral Zone’.

So it is ok to feel some of the negative emotions of anger, sadness, regret, fear, shame, guilt and even hate, but the thing is to never remain in this situation for long. Dr Renee said that letting go of the emotional suffering associated with the negative emotions is not the same as letting go of the emotions themselves. Hurting people should learn to let go of the suffering she said and posited several ways they can do that through Mindfulness.

a. Put some distance between you and these negative emotions.  She advices that hurting and traumatized people should find a quite calm place and be alone. While alone to calmly examine the emotional experiences they are going through. Pick the emotions one after the other and call them by name, detach them from you and address them one after the other. As you do this, you find out that they all become things outside you, and so seizes to be overwhelming any more.

b. Practice on how to remove these emotions completely out of your being. This is a powerful exercise; it is like releasing a caged bird. Reading “lessons in living” by Susan L Taylor, she talked about how she got to a point she had to scream out really loud to let out all the emotions trapped inside her. You can shout, cry, or stretch out your hand as if you are releasing something to the air, telling whatever toxic emotion you have harbored for months of years to go forever.

You can offer a prayer that you believe and say it as you release these emotions commanding them out of your body and believing them like a child would. This is where a Christian has an incredible advantage for there are so many relevant scriptures that can settle this for you. The advantage and resources a child of God has towards dealing with trauma is incredible. You not only have the word Jesus Himself but the Holy Spirit living in the inside of you to help you get through whatever you are not able to deal with by yourself. We have been told that the Holy Spirit is our helper and comforter, so why don’t you solicit for His help.

I remember trying to quit a habit about twenty years ago and crying asking the Holy Spirit to help me. That help came because I knew I could no longer believe the new year resolutions I could no longer keep. So you also can cry out asking for help and see how a heartfelt repentance and readiness to change, the Holy spirit can acknowledge and help you deal with. Once this help comes, you will begin to experience a release from these negative emotions and life suddenly begins to make meaning. You feel light headed and happy and begin to hope and plan for a beautiful future.

The challenge here however is that most people just flow right back into their old pattern of life and living without going through number 5 below.

  1. Enquiring. Seeking to find out reasons why God allowed the hurts, wounds and scars in the first place. Every hurt, every wound and scar that God allowed to happen to you are all meant to teach you some lessons with the purpose of growing your character. But the challenge is that most of us never pause to ask what lessons are embedded in the traumatic experiences they have gone through or are still going through. In the place of trying to remove the negative emotions as doctor Renee said, it is also very important to seek out what hard lessons your pain has taught you.

Maybe like me, your negative emotions are more like fear of trusting people, of rejection, of shame, of insecurity or isolation, you can add yours here too. The scars from your wounds could also come in the form of anxiety, addiction, depression or bitterness and others. But if God allowed them, it’s so you can learn a hard lesson from them and chart a better way forward for a more fulfilling life. When you master this skill, there is nothing that life will throw at you that you will not be able to overcome. It has not been an easy ride for me but with each passing day, I overcome by simple steps of faith and the will to keep pushing on, till I overcome all these negative emotions.

This post appears to be a long one so I will stop here and please do not miss the concluding part.
