Proven and effective ways to improve and sustain your focus

It’s one thing to plan to be focused and another to stay focused. In a world full of distractions, one has to fight off all manner of dissenting voices and issues to focus on what really counts. In the last post we looked at tips on how to stay focused this 2021. This post will deal with sustaining your focus so you do not derail.

Remember “we are not born focusing, it’s an acquired skill that requires initial effort and constant upgrading” Robert Genn

Anyone who has succeeded at anything in life, be it an athlete, a doctor, stylist, fashion designer, musician, surgeon and many others, did so because of sustained focus in their field or area of endeavours. Days of wishful thinking and day dreaming are over. ‘The get rich quick’ syndrome has eaten deep into the minds of many that no room is left for constructive plan to work hard and achieve like descent rich hard workers did. The mind blowing corruption, fraud and other vices with the trappings of ill- gotten wealth that accompany them have the honest people that strive daily to eke out a leaving wandering if they will ever amount to anything in life. I have good news for you dear reader. There is a peace and certain deep joy that accompanies wealth gotten right. It might take time, but the reward is awesome. If you are prepared to choose a right path, plan it out well and stay focused, success will also become you.

Ray T Benneth said “what you stay focused on will grow”

To achieve your set goals this year you must purpose to focus and sustain that focus to the end, no falling by the way side. Here is what to do then:

1. Build or improve your focus stamina.

“Concentration is the secret of strength in politics, in war, in trade, in all management of human affairs”, says Ralph Waldo Emerson

Practicing they say, makes you perfect in anything you do. Start practicing staying focused on any chosen task and sticking to it for at least 30minuites daily. Multi-tasking is good, but it is also a sure way to be distracted. Take the internet for example, If you are researching a particular topic and you are not focused you will find your-self shifting your focus to so many other choices popping up at you. It takes a lot of will power to stay focused with the subject matter you are researching. This happens to me always, I literally have to snap at me saying “Chinwe, get back to what brought you here”. This always works, so please learn to talk yourself out of any form of distraction this year.

When you are able to stay with any task for more than 30minuites for a month, try extending it with more minutes gradually till you get to an hour. If you can focus for an hour un distracted at any task, please reward your-self with a short break and get back to finishing the task. You can perfect this by sticking to it with any other task. This way you find your-self achieving your set goals at the end of each calendar year.

2. Kill Procrastination

‘Procrastination they say is the murder of every invention’. Infact procrastination is a terrible thief. It will steal your dream/vision. It will rob you of your family and friends. It will keep you in bed and steal quiet early morning devotion time with God. It will steal your youth and health by keeping you indoors eating unhealthy food because you cannot get out and shop and prepare healthy food. Oh dear, procrastination is truly evil. It has cost me and million others so much. Thank God I have dealt it a final blow lately. So many things I would have achieved if not for procrastination.

If you deal with procrastination, there is nothing you set your mind and effort to that you cannot achieve. It is equally important to ask God for His grace for supernatural ability and will power. Learn to do things that come to your mind especially things you can forget easily. For instance, when you wake up, you are reminded of things like documents you need to accomplish some tasks you have scheduled for the day. Once you get up from bed, get those documents ready and put them in your bag. You will most likely forget if you do not do it immediately. This has happened to me severally and I have learnt the hard way .

3. Avoid things that distract

  • Phones and social media

“When you work, work, when you play, play- don’t mix the two”. Jim Rohn

Online activities can be very distracting. Leave your phone open but take only very important calls. You can always return calls during your hourly intervals or breaks from practicing staying focused as discussed above. Mute notifications except for very important messages. Train yourself to stay away from social media for at least two hours, and respond only to very important messages when you do. The rest can wait till your day’s tasks are done and you are relaxing.  Avoid calls from people that get you upset and drive you into moods of angry and irritating moods. When you need to be prepped up, talk to a friend that cheers you up and refuels your good energy vibes.

  • Your mind

Take your mind off diminishing and damaging thoughts and keep them on the task ahead. But if you cannot, meditate on the word of God especially those that opposes the strong holds that limit you in your mind. If possible sing songs that bless God, it is an incredible boost to one’s strength. Works for me, you should try it. Believe in God’s word to you and your self as well. Like Larry Flynt said-

“Along with a strong nt in your inner voice, you also need laser-like focus combined with unwavering determination”. Larry Flynt

  • People

People are good at distracting others purposefully, never allow that. My last office was something else. It was like most people in that complex had this thing about coming to chat about mundane things when they get tired of their work. I tried to be nice initially, but when I noticed it was a pattern designed to distract me, I had my staff block those that had no previous appointment from having access to me. That seemed to work as the wandering distractors got the message and waited to chat with me as I headed to my car at the close of work. You can do the same

  • Environment

You can also stay away from distracting environments. If you must work in one, depending on what kind of task you are performing try things that will keep your mind focused on what you are doing. I like to listen to music when am writing, and the kind of music I listen to depends on the urgency of what I want to say. In a relaxed mood as I write, I like listening to smooth Jazz, but when I have an urgent message to pass on I listen to past music, and my favorite is “Searching” by Change. Some people prefer classical music or jazz without lyrics for optimal concentration. That kinda sends me to sleep, so please stick with what works for you since we are individually unique in our compositions.

It is equally good to work in productive environments where you can be encouraged to stay focused like libraries, quiet cafes, parks, gardens and less busy pool sides. You can also shut your ears away from noise with headphones especially the noise cancelling ones.

4. Limit your multi-tasking abilities

“Multitasking seems like a great way to get a lot done at once. But research has shown that our brains are not nearly as good at handling multiple tasks as we like to think they are. In fact, some researchers suggest that multitasking can actually reduce productivity by as much as 40%”. 1.

I am addicted to multi-tasking and it saves me a lot of time. But lately I have come to realise that it also costs me. I can be cooking and leave it to attend to something I remembered and had to deal with. But while at it, I get engrossed and my meal burns. Multi-tasking too much always has its down turns. You might never give your all to most of the tasks you pack in at a time. To finish any task thoroughly, you have to give it undivided attention. I am seeing the result now and it sure feels good.  Staying focused to my to do list has helped me loads and am sure it will help you too.

5. Prune your to do list

Most of the things that fill our daily ‘to-do-lists’ have no direct impact on our set goals. I have taken my time to look at my goals this year and any activity that will not impact my goals have been yanked out. Some might be painful, but sentiments do not get much done, do they? I suggest you go through your to do list daily and prioritise as well as remove frivolous demands on your limited time. This will include trimming time spent on activities and people that will not impact positively on your goals and subsequently life.

It’s not enough to be busy, so are the ants. The question is what are we busy about. Henry David Thoreau
